4k Video: Bird Photography Birdscapes – Seeing Birds as Part of a Scene – In this video I cover birdscapes — a way of composing that includes habitat, light, and structure as parts of the image. I take you in-the-field to visualize birdscapes before making them and show how to train your eye to recognize these opportunities in the field. I walk through visual examples covering vegetation and background framing, complex backgrounds that work, cropping for composition, reflections and light-based framing, and integrating other birds, bark textures, and environmental elements. workshops info

4k Video: Bird Photography Flightscapes – Composition in Flight – In this video I introduce the concept of “flightscapes”, as an extension of birdscapes. I take you through raw image sequences of bird flight through compositional openings and how to recognize those openings before a bird flies through them. I give many examples and tips based on circumstances.

4k Video: Warbler Photography Simplified for the Highest Success Rate – I outline a straightforward way to think about the relationship between aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and exposure compensation. I give you my system for using aperture priority when photographing perched warblers. workshops info

4k Video: Pre-capture for Warbler Photography – Pre-capture, also known as pre-continuous shooting, can be used to photograph perched warblers efficiently. This video shows you exactly how, taking you through slow-motion video of hyperactive warblers and then providing many example videos of warblers at full speed. You can use this video to prepare your eyes and mind for maximum success in the field on your own or at one of my warbler workshops. workshops info

4k Video: Choosing Different Modes for Bird Photography – Part 2 – shutter speed priority and manual mode, for flight and action images, are covered in depth. workshops info

4k Video: Choosing Different Modes for Bird Photography – Part 1– aperture priority, metering, and exposure compensation are covered in depth, which is especially useful for songbird photography. workshops info

4k Video: Bird Flight Photography Deep Dive – Topics covered include pre-focusing distances and techniques, managing multiple birds in flight, frame rate and wing flap synchronization, client workshop examples, action photography tips and probability assessment. workshops info

4k Video: Early Spring Birds of Northern Michigan – I cover late March to early May in spring in northern Michigan with respect to bird activity and migration, with video from early spring, 2024 – from Sharp-tailed grouse and ducks to woodpeckers, hawks and other birds. workshops info

Real-world demonstrations and examples are included throughout. workshops info

4k Video: Pre-capture and high-level bird photography – I cover how to evaluate conditions in-the-field and adjust to them, both with your approach and with settings. I discus limitations of your equipment, as well. workshops info
